DADS SAUSAGE SAMMICH

por | | 0 comments

DADS SAUSAGE SAMMICH
This is just a simple sandwich but to me its all about family memories........
When I was little we would go to grammas house after church. Gramma always made some yummy stuff and this was one thing she made that I loved. After she passed, my dad took on the job. I will post his recipe but add my variations after it. Today dad and I still swap recipes. He will tell me the latest he cooked or ask me questions on how to do stuff. ( I'm a chef.) And I will tell him my latest yummy things Ive made. Many times dad takes my recipe then adapts it to his life. My mom used to cook beef stew on top of the stove. When I first married I did too but I hated it because it always scorched. Then I found an oven beef stew recipe that I just loveeeeeeeeeee. A few yrs back I told my dad about it and now hes adapted it to the microwave. And that's how it goes all the time, round and round. He tells people he talks to this chef he knows in California lolol. I had professional photos done once for a food demo I had to do at a big dept. store in the mall. I sent my dad a pic and now he has it framed on his wall. That's "his kid" as he says when I call on the phone. (The picture below the About Me section is the one on his wall.)

DADS SAUSAGE SAMMICH Makes 2

1 dozen breakfast sausages (ok dad uses big dinner sausages, I cant find them out here so I use these but they are the same sausage just different size)

1 large onion, sliced

Kaiser rolls (we called them hard roll on the east coast) or toast

butter

Mustard (we use Guldens spicy)

Saute the sausages in some butter, add the sliced onions when sausages are about halfway done. Cover and cook till done. You want it to be nicely browned and onions caramelized. Fill rolls with sausages and top with onions. Spread on some mustard and eat!

Ok now for my version....

I frequently buy bulk breakfast sausage because the bf loves it. I freeze them in little bags for when I need it. So for me to start this recipe, I take out the frozen sausage and put in pan with about 1/4c water. When sausage seem thawed thru, saute, add a pat of butter and the sliced onions. Cover and cook for about 15min. Onions should be soft by then. If they are take off cover, raise heat to hi and stand there and watch em. They need to be browned and if you walk away you will be eatin out lol. Stir as needed till all liquid is evaporated and sausage is brown and onions caramelized.

I like this on Kaiser rolls too but I don't always have that around. We like it on sourdough toast tho. I use Guldens spicy mustard too but any kind you like will do . I do all as above with dads only we add sliced provolone cheese on it. Its delish! Told my dad about that one too.

This will make the whole house smell like onions!

And yes that's a pic up there of my breakfast today! hehehe

Darin and Kari's Wedding Cake

por | | 0 comments

I vowed that I would never make any cakes 9 months pregnant.  But when my brother asked me to make his wedding cake, I was happy to do it.  Luckily, I have a loving husband who helps me when I need it.  He actually did most of the work on this cake, and it turned out great!

Two of the cakes are chocolate with a chocolate butter cream filling, and the other two are a white cake with butter cream filling.  As we were getting ready to stack the cake, my 3-year old came up to my husband with cake crumbs all over his face!  We soon realized that he had taken several handfuls of this cake and eaten them.  We were able to doctor it up and save the day.  It turned out great, and I am very thankful for my husband, Jim, for helping out so much with this cake.  And a BIG congratulations to Darin and Kari on their special day.  Thanks for letting us do your cake!  I think I will now retire from cakes until this baby is born.
This is Darin and Kari cutting their cake.  It wasn't long before they had it smashed in each other's faces.  They were sure silly!

Treehugger Premium Organic Lime Lemonade Review

Treehugger Premium Organic Lime Lemonade Review
A few months ago I came across the treehugger Orange juice, which I thought was made by the popular blog treehugger, but was disappointed to learn that this was not true. The juice was OK, but I thought it was not worth the $2.99 price tag. Well, a couple of days ago I found the treehugger lime lemonade, which was priced at only $1.39, less than half the price of orange juice. I decided to get a bottle because it was cheaper than the Minute Maid lemonade. The price was suspicious at first, but carefully read the label and determined that the juice was not past its expiration date.

Remember to shake these juices as there was a lot of pulp and sediment at the bottle. Once I shook it, the color changed from pale and clear yellow, to a cloudy pale yellow which made the beverage resemble lemonade. The label states that the lemonade is "an elegant blend of Organic Tahitian limes and Organic Sicilian lemons: Not too sweet & not too sour...just perfect!" I would almost agree with this if the lemonade was a tad less sour. The sweetness level is...well...perfect, but the beverage is a bit sour. I like sour things, but towards the end of the bottle, my jaw was clenching. Despite the sourness, I find this lemonade to be much more enjoyable than many of the other lemonades that come in similar packages and are sold at convenience stores or gas stations. Good job, I like this better than the orange juice.

Scores:
Cost - $1.39 CAD for a 355 mL bottle
Taste - 8.5/10

Overall - 8.5/10...better than other lemonades that some in similar packages

Red Fire Energy Drink Review

por | | 0 comments

Red Fire Energy Drink Review
It has been over a week since I reviewed an energy drink so here is one. This is Red Fire and yes, it is made by the folks who make Red Rain and Red Rave - Cott. So how is Red Fire any different from the aforementioned products? Cott make Red Fire specially for Sobeys, which in turn sell this value energy drink under their Compliments label. The first time I saw Red Fire was in the Fall of 2009 and the reason why I didn't buy it back then was because it was only sold in packs of 4 for $6.99 CAD, and I never buy energy drinks I haven't tried in bulk. The reason why I finally bought it is because the Sobeys that I went to was selling these individually for $1.99 CAD each.

Having said that Red Fire is made by Cott, I half expect it to taste like a Red Bull clone. I was not disappointed. Not only does Red Fire taste like a Red Bull clone, but it has inherited the Red Rain sour kick which gives it a similar crisp finish.

In the energy department, Red Fire is identical to Red Bull, Red Rain and Red Rave with 80 mg of caffeine, which is good enough for a a burst of energy lasting for about an hour.

I noticed that a lot of users who visit this blog search for ingredients lists so I decided to start listing the ingredients found in each energy drink/shot, mint, etc. I try. So here are the first 2 lists:

Medicinal Ingredients:
  • Taurine - 1,000 mg
  • D-glucuronolactone - 600 mg
  • Caffeine - 80 mg
  • Niacin - 20 mg
  • Pantothenic acid - 5 mg
  • Vitamin B6 - 5 mg
  • Vitamin B12 - 5 mcg
Non-medicinal Ingredients: Carbonated water, sugar/glucose-fructose, malic acid, sodium citrate, natural and artificial flavour, potassium benzoate, inositol, colour.

Scores:
Cost - $1.99 CAD for a 250 mL can, or $6.99 CAD for a 4 pack
Taste - 8.3/10
Energy - 6/10

Overall - 14.3/20...made by Cott for Sobeys, tastes just like Red Rain and Red Rave

Ashley's Cupcake Decorating Birthday Party
We had a great group of kids, and we kept things simple. We had the kids do some balloon relay races. They also got to take a swing at a pinata.

Banana Cake

por | | 0 comments

Makes 18 servings

One of our family favorites! This Banana Cake is a fabulous way to use up very, very ripe bananas—in fact, the blacker the banana peels...the better the recipe tastes. This is a very moist cake which is easily made in a sheet pan so it works great for potlucks or picnics. It is very delicious! I have made this with all white flour; an alternate with all wheat flour and this way with a mix of both ~ cooking is about experimenting so have fun!

Ingredients

Sift together in large bowl:
1 cup Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
1 cup All Purpose Flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice

Mix in:
1 cup Splenda Granular
1 cup Brown Sugar
1 1/4 cups Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Beat In:
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
2 cups Bananas, Mashed

Add In:
4 Eggs, one at a time

Beat In:
1/4 cup flaked Coconut
1/2 cup chopped Walnuts

Directions
Spread batter into 12x18 pan which has been sprayed lightly with Pam™.

Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow cake to cool. Cut into 18 squares and serve.

Frosting options:

  •  Frost with your favorite cream cheese frosting and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts;
  • Sift Splenda Powdered Sugar* over the top;

Celtic thriller as Europe triumph in Ryder Cup classic!

Celtic thriller as Europe triumph in Ryder Cup classic!
A victory roar from McDowell (left) and Poulter after clinching the Ryder Cup

A stunning days golf at the Celtic Manor in South Wales saw Europe win the closest Ryder Cup contest since Brookline, Massachusetts in 1999.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell won the final singles match to help Europe regain the trophy by the smallest possible margin, 14½ points to 13½ points.

Trailing 9-6½ going into the weather delayed finale, the United States fought back superbly to take the match to the wire. Only Europe's Luke Donald, Ian Poulter and Miguel Angel Jimenez managed to win their singles matches, whist victories in the singles today by American's Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson brought the USA level with Europe at 13½ points apiece.

This meant it all went down to the final singles match between McDowell and Californian Hunter Mahan, as Europe went in search of the magical 14½ points needed for outright victory. McDowell, ironically the US Open champion kept his cool and held his nerve as Mahan was forced to concede defeat on the 17th green, sparking wild celebrations among the European team and the majority of the 35,000 fans.

HOW THE FINAL DAY UNFOLDED (BST)

0905: Westwood/Stricker start singles (Europe 9½-6½ USA)
1149: Europe up in 7 matches, USA in 4, one all-square
1247: Stricker beats Westwood 2&1 (9½-7½)
1248: D Johnson beats Kaymer 6&4 (9½-8½)
1302: Poulter beats Kuchar 5&4 (10½-8½)
1320: McIlroy halved with Cink (11-9)
1329: Donald beats Furyk 1up (12-9)
1403: Jimenez beats Watson 4&3 (13-9)
1409: Overton beats Fisher 3&2 (13-10)
1414: Woods beats F Molinari 4&3 (13-11)
1442: Mickelson beats Hanson 4&2 (13-12)
1501: E Molinari halved with Fowler (13½-12½)
1502: Z Johnson beats Harrington 4&3 (13½-13½)
1520: McDowell beats Mahan 3&1 (14½-13½)

"A fantastic result for Europe's golfers, a great advert for the game and a marvellous advert for sport."

Chicago, Illinois is the venue in two years time, when the USA will have the opportunity to regain the coverted trophy on home soil.

'My Goal Of The Week' - Marta Vieira da Silva for Brazil at the Women's World Cup.

por | | 0 comments

'My Goal Of The Week' - Marta Vieira da Silva for Brazil at the Women's World Cup.
'My Goal of the Week' was scored by Marta Vieira da Silva on 27th September, for Brazil against the US during their semi-final match in Hangzhou, China at the Women's World Cup 2007.

Marta, only 21 (pictured right) was born in Alagoas, Brazil and plays her club football in Sweden for 'Umea IK.'

She is the 2006 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year, was runner-up in 2005 and is currently the World Cup's leading scorer with seven goals in just five games.

Marta scored twice against the U.S, her second a magnificent individual effort in the 80th minute. Taking a pass from Renata Costa outside the penalty area, and with her back to goal she deftly flicked the ball with her left foot over both her head and that of U.S.defender Tina Ellertson to break into the box. She then cut back inside to avoid defender Catherine Whitehill, before firing a low 12-yard shot with her right foot into the bottom corner of the net to put Brazil 4-0 up.

Brazil's 4-0 rout of the Americans in the semi-final played in front of 47,818 at Hangzhou Dragon Stadium, saw the U.S teams 51-match unbeaten run come to an end.

Now Brazil will play tournament favourites Germany in the Final on Sunday 30th September at Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium.

The U.S. will face Norway for third place on Sunday in a match that will precede the Final.

Milo Chocolate Nutritional Energy Drink Review

por | | 0 comments

Milo Chocolate Nutritional Energy Drink Review
A couple of weeks ago I was at a Vietnamese market and came across this guy in one of their fridges. I have heard of it, but had never seen. I am not sure if this is a real energy drink or one of those like Nutrament. I think it is just supposed to give you energy from all the vitamins and minerals and not really a kick like caffeine works.

The drink tastes like chocolate soy milk with a touch of vanilla, but it's thicker and has some small chunks of chocolate. There is nothing else to really say about this in terms of the taste. There are no unpleasant notes or a weird aftertaste. If you like chocolate soy milk, then you will probably enjoy the taste of this.

Since there is no added caffeine (I am sure there is some from the chocolate), there is no kick, but it does work as an energy drink in the sense that it gives you energy to not fall asleep when you are feeling tired. After about 20 minutes of consuming this at breakfast, I felt pretty good and eager to do something. The whole morning I had plenty of energy and actually got some stuff done. This has its audience, but if you are after that caffeine high, skip this one.

Ingredients: sugar, nonfat milk, barley malt extract, cocoa processed with alkali, milkfat, palm oil, carrageenan, calcium phosphate, sodium phosphate, soy lecithin, magnesium carbonate, ascorbic acid, vanillin-an artificial flavour, ferric pyrophosphate (iron), niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, pyrodixine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, biotin, Vitamin B12.

Scores:
Cost - $2
Taste - 7.8/10
Energy - 6/10

Overall - 13.8/20...vitamin/mineral type of energy, not a caffeine kick

Holiday Survival Week ~ Green Bean Casserole Variations

por | | 0 comments

Side dishes truly make your Holiday meal! The great thing is that you don't have to slave all day to have great side dishes. We've provided two versions of the always popular green bean casserole; including a healthier version (which I actually prefer).

Classic Green Bean Casserole

Ingredients:
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
3/4 cup milk
2 (9 ounce) packages frozen green beans
1 1/3 cups French-fried onions
ground black pepper to taste

Directions:
In a 1-1/2 quart casserole mix soup, milk, and pepper. Stir in beans and 2/3 cup french fried onions.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes or until heated through, stir. Top with remaining 2/3 cup of french fried onions. Bake 5 minutes more or until the onions are golden.

*    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *   *   *    *    *    *    *    *
Healthier Version: Delicious Almond Green Beans Side Dish

Ingredients:
2 pounds of thin green beans, trimmed
1/4 cup of olive oil
1 cup of whole almonds with skin, coarsely chopped
1-1/2 tablespoons of finely grated fresh lemon zest
1 large garlic clove, minced
1-1/2 cups of coarsely chopped parsley leaves

Directions:
Begin by heating the olive oil in a large skillet over low to medium heat until it is hot but be sure it is not smoking. Add almonds and toast. Stir constantly until they are golden brown in color, approximately four minutes. Transfer the almond mixture to a small bowl and stir in freshly grated lemon zest and the minced garlic clove. Allow mixture to cool.

Add parsley. If you want some extra seasoning, add some salt, pepper or other seasoning. Set aside.

Next, cook the green beans in a pot of boiling salted water until they are tender, approximately eight minutes. Drain the water from the green beans and place in serving dish. If you want to season the green beans, do so now with salt, pepper, or any other seasoning. Add some of the almond sauce to the green beans. You can serve the rest of the sauce on the side. Makes 8 servings.

The day after Halloween - the breakfast

por | | 0 comments

Lil man stayed overnight here after Trick or Treating in the neighborhood. His folks went to a party. And so I made some breakfast for us. Ive been wanting to try this recipe out, since I had some blueberries in the freezer I needed to use up. Ive been meaning to do it all week but kept forgetting to put it together so it could soak overnight. Last nite after dinner I decided to do it with lil man helping me put it together.

This is really easy, basically just layers, let it soak and bake the next morning. Its almost like dessert, a bread pudding. So while I cut up the bread......and I often have either sour dough or a nice Italian bread around, lil man cut up the cream cheese and helped assemble this. I like to make hearty french toast and so I use a good sturdy bread when I make it. I decided to do the same with this. You basically layer bread, cheese, blueberries, more bread and pour the custard mix over it all and let soak over nite. My proportions were off because I used more bread trying to use it up. I also added more eggs and milk. To the egg mixture I added some cinnamon and a bit of vanilla. I do that to my regular french toast too.

So while this was baking, I baked off some bacon to go with it. I warmed up some maple syrup too altho you could do without it. But because there is so very little sweet with this......I like it with the syrup, better. Maybe next time if I have more blueberries Ill make a blueberry topping. I certainly have leftovers and Ill be packaging them up to have later on.  I quick warm up in the oven or microwave, will be great. I do that to my leftover french toast too. This way I don't have to cook them all the time.

Fresh Blueberry-stuffed French Toast Casserole
Assemble this simple casserole 12 to 24 hours ahead, or just before baking.

Ingredients:
4 large slices sourdough bread, crust removed and cubed
8 ounces cream cheese, cubed
2 cups fresh blueberries
6 large eggs
1 cup milk
1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
3 tablespoons powdered sugar

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375*F. Arrange half the bread cubes in an 8-inch square baking dish. Distribute the cream cheese cubes evenly over the top of the bread. Distribute the blueberries over the top.

2. Top with the remaining bread cubes.

3. Beat eggs, milk and cinnamon together and pour over. Bake for 35 minutes, uncovered. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.

Spurs have a chance to show their credentials - Betting News with BetfredSpurs have a chance to show their credentials - Betting News with Betfred

versus

Tottenham Hotspur can hammer another nail in Chelsea's Premier League title ambitions at White Hart Lane on Sunday, and given Spurs' recent matches there should be no shortage of entertainment in this London derby.

Harry Redknapp's side have impressed in both the Premier League and Champions League so far this season, with their European heroics overshadowing their domestic form on many occasions.

On Sunday they welcome a struggling Chelsea side, that have been knocked off the top of the Premier League table after failing to win any of their last four league games, and seen them collect just five points out of a possible 18, as well as losing in midweek to Marseille in a Champions League tie.

Considering how well Chelsea started the season they have seen a real contrast in fortunes and Spurs could heap more misery on them at White Hart Lane - with the home side priced at 9/5 in the football betting to take all three points.

Spurs boast a wealth of attacking prowess, which has been proven with their average of three goals a game in the Champions League group stages, and they are likely to pose great problems for a Chelsea defence that has looked more fragile in recent weeks, than they have done in a very long time.

Although Spurs have scored goals for fun at times this season, finding the net has been Carlo Ancelotti's problem throughout this poor run. They have not scored more than once in a Premier League game since the end of October and are 6/4 in the Premier League betting to win on Sunday, meaning they will need likes of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka to step up.

Redknapp told 'Talksport' that Spurs are now at the same level as Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea - and if they are victorious this weekend then not many people can argue with this.

The veteran manager claimed Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon can "cause anybody problems" and the strikers at his disposal mean he sets out to attack teams. Chelsea would need a real turnaround in fortunes to reverse their recent run, and Spurs can close to within one point of their opponents with victory over their fellow Londoners.

My Tip of the Weekend:

Spurs'attacking prowess will prove too strong for Chelsea, and Tottenham to be winning at both half-time and full-time at 4/1 looks great value with Betfred.
Also with Jermaine Defoe fit again the 6/4 on offer with Betfred that he will score at anytime in the match looks a steal.

Sunday 12th December: Tottenham v Chelsea, kick-off 4pm, Live on Sky Sports 1.
